Cushing Hub Sees Modest Inventory Gain as Canada's Tar Sands Maintenance Looms
Oklahoma's Cushing Hub, the key storage site for crude oil and the reference point for West Texas Intermediate prices, has seen a slight improvement in its total inventory over the past month.
According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), the hub held 22,428 million barrels of crude oil as of August 21, up from 21,252 million barrels at the end of the previous week but slightly lower than the 22,566 million barrels recorded a week earlier.
While this increase may seem modest, it's worth noting that Cushing's total inventory has recovered somewhat since its low point of 18,599 million barrels in late July.
However, a looming maintenance season in Canada could have a significant impact on the hub's inventory levels. The EIA reports that Canadian tar sands oil production is set to drop by 300,000 barrels per day in September as oil producers and pipeline operators prepare for routine maintenance.
