Cyprus' Cronos Field to Supply Europe with Natural Gas by 2028

Cyprus is on track to become an alternative energy source for European nations as Russia's war in Ukraine and Middle East upheaval drive a search for new supplies. According to Cyprus' Energy Minister Michael Damianos, natural gas from the undersea Cronos field off the island nation's southern coast will be available to European consumers by March 2028.

The project is a joint effort between TotalEnergies of France and Eni of Italy, who made a final decision last month to proceed with developing the Cronos field. This marks the first time gas from east Mediterranean deposits will be supplied to European markets.

Damianos stated that Cyprus' role as an alternative energy source is crucial given the current situation in Ukraine and the Middle East. He noted that work on a pipeline connecting Cronos to existing infrastructure at Egypt's Zohr natural gas deposit 105 kilometres away will begin later this year, with completion expected within 18 months.
