Cyprus' Kronos Project Aims to Fuel Egypt's LNG Comeback
Egypt's natural gas production has been declining since its peak in 2021, falling by 7% year-on-year to 109.3m cubic meters per day in the second quarter of 2026.
The country's domestic demand for gas continues to rise, reaching a record 190m cubic meters per day in June, while power generation alone consumed 113m cubic meters per day, almost as much as Egypt's entire domestic output.
This has left the country with a significant shortfall of over 75m cubic meters per day, prompting Cairo to rebuild its import system and resume LNG imports in mid-2024.
The Kronos project, which is expected to come online in 2028, offers up to 2.8 million tonnes of liquefied natural gas (LNG) per year and could help bridge the gap between supply and demand in Egypt.
