Czech Electricity Prices Skyrocket Amid Record Solar Output
The average electricity price on the Czech day-ahead market reached nearly 110 EUR/MWh in July, a 22% increase from last year. Despite record output from solar power plants and higher generation at nuclear power plants, prices rose due to regional conditions, limited availability of dispatchable sources, and higher natural gas prices.
Solar power plants set a new monthly record with 704.7 GWh of electricity generated in July, surpassing the previous record of 701 GWh in May. Nuclear power generation also increased significantly, reaching 2.75 TWh, up from 2.16 TWh last year.
The heat wave likely contributed to the high prices, as gas-fired power plants are less efficient during hot weather. The Czech market remains exposed to regional price movements through interconnections with neighboring countries.
