Czech Households Face Higher Gas Prices This Winter

Czech households are bracing for higher gas prices this winter due to rising global market rates. According to Minister of Industry and Trade Karel Havlíček, there will be enough gas to meet demand but consumers can expect price increases as a result of the current market situation.

The price of gas has remained stubbornly high at €55-60 per megawatt-hour compared to around €30 previously. This increase is expected to reach Europe by the next heating season, not due to fuel shortages, but purely because of higher prices. Gas for future periods is already being purchased at higher rates.

Czechia's underground gas storage facilities are currently filling ahead of schedule despite high prices. The country ranks among the top seven in Europe for storage filling, with a level nearing 65% and over 80% of capacity contracted by the government. Minister Havlíček said 'No one needs to fear the winter.'

However, some traders are holding off on purchases until later due to price uncertainty. The country's energy company ČEZ is seeking new liquefied natural gas contracts after its current five-year booking expires next year. ČEZ has secured additional small-capacity contracts at the Dutch Eemshaven terminal to cover any possible delay in construction of a new terminal in Germany.
