DA Seeks Funding for Palm Oil Expansion to Cut Imports

The Philippine Department of Agriculture (DA) is seeking to expand palm oil plantations in the country, aiming to reduce import dependence and supply feedstock for clean energy projects. The DA estimates that imports currently account for nearly 90% of palm oil demand.

Agriculture Secretary Francisco P. Tiu Laurel, Jr. told a House of Representatives budget hearing that the government needs funding to increase palm oil production. He noted that palm oil producers are profitable and that there is evident demand.

The DA is seeking at least PHP300 million in funding for palm oil development in 2027, with a possible PHP1 billion allocation over five years. The initial plan is to develop 100,000 hectares of palm oil plantations by 2028, eventually reaching 300,000 hectares.
