Darfur Food Crisis Deepens as Prices Surge Amid War-Related Economic Fallout

Food prices have skyrocketed in Omdurman, with residents reporting increases of 20 to 25% over the past month. Essential goods such as sugar and cooking oil have risen by more than 40%. A kilogram of sugar now costs around SDG5,000, up from SDG4,500-4,800 last month.

A litre of cooking oil has increased to SDG12,000, while a kilogram of flour sells for about SDG4,000. Dairy prices have also climbed, with a kilogram of powdered milk now costing between SDG31,000 and SDG32,000, up from SDG26,000-28,000 last month.

In North Darfur's El Malha region, the food crisis is deepening. The El Malha Emergency Room has warned that disrupted supply routes, shortages of basic commodities, and soaring food prices could push the region towards famine as the rainy season approaches.
