Dawson Creek Explosion Blamed on Unqualified Workers

A recent report from Technical Safety B.C. found that an explosion in Dawson Creek, B.C., earlier this year was caused by 'unqualified workers' disconnecting a gas line using a risky manoeuvre known as 'live capping.'

The incident occurred on January 8 when two labourers began preparing a damaged gas furnace for removal while the gas supply remained on.

They disconnected the appliance shut-off valve and removed the gas supply riser, resulting in the uncontrolled release of natural gas into the immediate work area.

The gas was ignited by a pilot light on a nearby water heater, causing a small explosion and fire at the property.

Fortunately, the workers suffered only minor injuries, including burns and singed hair. One worker ran outside to shut off the gas supply at the meter, while the other helped the resident evacuate.
