Day Calls for Accountability and Strategic Trade in Canadian Politics
Former Canadian Alliance leader Stockwell Day spoke out on various issues in Canadian politics during an interview. He emphasized the importance of accountability and 'tough love' in governance, citing his time working with former Alberta premier Ralph Klein as an example. Under Klein's government, they pledged to reduce provincial spending by 20% over four years, despite knowing it could cost them re-election.
Day argued that governments should prioritize prevention when it comes to wildfires and emphasize the need for consequences for people convicted of deliberately setting fires. He also called for stronger forest management and investments in water infrastructure to protect communities from the risks associated with urban-forest interfaces.
In regards to immigration policy, Day said Canada should continue to welcome legal immigrants while applying clearer consequences for those who commit serious crimes or remain in the country without proper status. He cautioned that rapid population growth can put pressure on housing, healthcare, and public services, emphasizing the need for transparency and accountability from Ottawa.
Day also discussed trade with China and the US, stating that he is not a supporter of tariffs as they hurt consumers and businesses on both sides of the border. He called for Canada to think more strategically about its relationship with China while seeking a stronger trade relationship with the US. Furthermore, Day highlighted the importance of Canada's energy industry, which he believes has significant opportunities for growth.
He argued that regulatory uncertainty has discouraged investment in the sector, leading to a reliance on selling oil at a discount to one market. Day emphasized that Canadian energy is produced under high environmental and labour standards and could help countries reduce their reliance on coal or authoritarian regimes' energy sources.
