De-escalation Signals Emerge in Key Energy Shipping Chokepoints
A de-escalation in tensions emerged simultaneously on September 11 in two of the world's most sensitive energy shipping chokepoints, the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea's Bab el-Mandeb Strait.
The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member states are set to meet with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in Oman next Monday to discuss temporary arrangements for commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. Yemen's Houthi rebels also announced that fighting in provinces along the Red Sea's western coast has ceased.
The news led to a 2% decline in Brent crude prices, falling to $105.57 per barrel intraday. The GCC countries' core demand is for any agreement to be strictly temporary and ensure commercial vessels can transit the strait normally.
