Delhi Auto-Rickshaw and Taxi Drivers Resist CNG Price Hike Amid Global Energy Volatility

Delhi's auto-rickshaw and taxi drivers are up in arms against the recent CNG price hike, announced by Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL). The increase of Rs 3.89 per kg, effective from August 29, has been met with resistance from Rajendra Soni, general secretary of the Delhi Pradesh Taxi Union.

Soni stated that auto-rickshaw and taxi drivers are already facing increased operating expenses and do not wish to pass these costs onto commuters.

The price hike is attributed to rising input gas costs amid volatility in international energy markets. Global spot liquefied natural gas (LNG) prices have nearly doubled due to escalating conflicts in West Asia, which have disrupted LNG cargo movements through the Strait of Hormuz, combined with rising European demand ahead of winter.

IGL described the price increase as a calibrated adjustment, intended to partially offset higher input gas costs while maintaining uninterrupted supply. Delhi's retail CNG price has risen gradually from Rs 77.09 per kg to Rs 83.09 per kg, marking an increase of approximately 7.8 per cent.
