Delhi Remains India's Costliest Gold Market Amid Elevated Import Levels
Delhi stands apart as India's costliest major city for gold, with a 24-karat rate of ₹15,905 per gram on August 31, 2026. This is ₹15 above the rates in Mumbai, Kolkata, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai, Pune, and Ahmedabad.
The price disparity between Delhi and other cities is not unusual, according to experts. Local commodity logistics, market structures, and the city's role as an entry point for a significant share of India's bullion imports contribute to this premium.
Gold futures tracked by the Multi Commodity Exchange of India (MCX) inform Delhi's intraday board movements, while the IBJA morning rate sets the reference for most registered dealers in Karol Bagh and Dariba Kalan. The World Gold Council's 2026 demand data shows India running at elevated import levels through July, indicating domestic commercial demand has not softened meaningfully.
Delhi's gold buyers skew older and more culturally embedded in jewellery traditions, with wedding-occasion demand and family savings purchases dominating trade in Dariba Kalan. At ₹15,905 per gram, gold still functions as a savings instrument with a two-millennium track record.
