Delta State Unveils Plan to Establish Independent Electricity Market
The Delta State Government has unveiled plans to transform its electricity sector through the establishment of an independent electricity market. The initiative involves creating the Delta State Electricity Regulatory Commission and Delta State Rural Electrification Agency, which are expected to become operational by the end of 2026.
According to officials, the two institutions will be responsible for regulating electricity generation, distribution, and supply under the provisions of the Electricity Act. This move aims to strengthen the state's electricity regulatory framework, expand access to power, particularly in rural communities, and create an enabling environment for private sector participation.
The panellists noted that Delta State is strategically positioned to build a viable electricity market due to its abundant natural gas reserves and significant power generation capacity. However, inadequate electricity distribution was identified as the biggest obstacle to unlocking the state's energy potential.
