Diesel Price Surge Threatens Harvest Expenses for US Farmers
Diesel prices have reached an all-time high in the United States, reaching $5.85 nationwide. In Illinois, the price is slightly lower at around $5.65. This significant increase is expected to impact farmers during harvest time, particularly those who rely on diesel for fuel.
Roney Farms' Lucas Roney expressed concerns about the rising costs, stating that it will 'definitely go into our harvest expense.' He noted that his farm has managed to store enough diesel for the first half of the harvest but is worried about the refueling costs later on. The current prices are coupled with high fertilizer costs, making it a challenging time for farmers.
The situation highlights the ongoing struggle faced by farmers due to increasing input costs and record-high diesel prices. While corn and soybean prices have seen an uptick, which may help offset some of these expenses, other inputs like fertilizer continue to rise, making it a precarious situation for agricultural producers.
