The Producer Price Index (PPI) has seen a significant increase of 5.4% year over year, according to data released by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. This surge is largely driven by a substantial hike in diesel prices, which have reached an all-time high of $5.98 per gallon nationally.

AJ Wormuth, owner of Half Full Dairy and chairman of the Northeast Dairy Producers Association, has seen firsthand the impact of rising costs on his business. 'Diesel is having a huge effect right now,' he said. 'It affects our trucking rates to get our milk to market.'

The increased cost of diesel and natural gas is affecting not just farmers but also consumers. As prices continue to rise, economists predict that the Consumer Price Index (CPI) will hold steady at 3.4%, which could influence the Federal Reserve's decision on interest rates.
