Diesel Prices Hit Record Highs Amid US Farming Season

US farmers are facing record-high diesel prices at an inopportune time for harvesting soybeans and corn, two of the nation's largest commodities.

The price of diesel hit a record high of $5.85 per gallon on September 4th, with prices continuing to rise to an average of $6.05 per gallon as of Friday, according to AAA.

Paul Mitchell, a professor of agricultural and applied economics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, notes that these high diesel prices will not only affect harvesting but also the transportation of grain or silage from the field to the farm and then to market.

Farmers are already facing higher costs for fertilizer, seeds, and equipment this year, making it an even tougher season.
