Diesel Prices Near Record Levels Threaten U.S. Farm Profitability
U.S. farmers are facing another challenge as diesel prices approach $6 per gallon, threatening their harvest margins.
The price of diesel has risen to $5.61 per gallon on August 28, 2026, making it about $1.90 more expensive than a year ago and only $0.21 below the record set in June 2022.
With combines, tractors, and grain trucks entering their most fuel-intensive period, farmers are already balancing commodity prices, fertilizer, machinery, labor, and interest expenses.
The supply picture is also adding to the concern, with distillate fuel oil inventories dropping to 103.391 million barrels, down from 105.619 million a week earlier.
For farmers, a tighter market increases exposure to price volatility at a time when reducing fuel consumption is difficult without affecting harvest logistics, equipment use, and transportation.
