Diplomacy Pays Off for Alberta in Trade War

Nathan Cooper, Alberta's senior representative to the United States, says his province's diplomacy-first approach is paying off in the Canada-US trade war. Alberta's industries are not immune to the impact of tariffs, but they are not seeing the same level of direct hit as other provinces.

Cooper credits Premier Danielle Smith's approach with getting results for Alberta. He notes that the U.S. continues to increase its imports of Canadian oil, despite the trade dispute. The province's position on U.S. alcohol imports has also shown appreciation from American officials.

This approach contrasts with other provinces, such as Ontario, which have taken a more aggressive stance. Premier Doug Ford has pushed for a stronger unified response and suggested cutting off energy exports to the U.S. Smith has rejected these ideas, sticking to her diplomacy-first approach.
