Diverging Demand Forecasts: Oil Market Uncertainty Reaches New Heights

The divergence in oil demand growth forecasts between major organizations is growing. According to Ole Hansen, Saxo Bank's Head of Commodity Strategy, the difference between OPEC and the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) and the International Energy Agency (IEA) now exceeds two million barrels per day. The EIA projects a 1.3 million barrel per day contraction in demand, while the IEA expects a 1.6 million barrel per day decline.

OPEC remains optimistic, forecasting a 0.6 million barrel per day increase in demand growth for this year. However, Hansen notes that the widening gap highlights the uncertainty surrounding oil demand after six months of Middle East supply disruptions and high energy prices.

Despite tight physical conditions, crude oil has struggled to sustain a stronger rally. The market is balancing severe near-term supply constraints against growing concerns about high prices and weaker economic activity.
