DNV Report Backs North Sea Gas Drilling as Climate-Friendly Option

Drilling the North Sea's Jackdaw gas field is considered the best option for reducing carbon emissions, according to a report by DNV, a global leader in measuring energy industry emissions. The assessment supports the case for the Prime Minister to approve the project and its sister project, the Rosebank field off Shetland.

The report states that relying on home-grown gas from the UK and Norway would be the most climate-friendly option compared to importing liquefied natural gas (LNG). North Sea fossil fuels are considered the lower-carbon option due to their lower greenhouse gas emissions. DNV's assessment warns that replacing domestic production with imports would reduce energy security.

The Jackdaw gas field, located 150 miles east of Aberdeen, could produce nearly seven million cubic meters of gas a day, enough for 1.4 million homes. The project has already received £800m in investment from former owners Shell and current owner Adura.
