Dollar Rallies as Stocks Fall and Crude Oil Prices Surge
The dollar index, DXY, surged to a 1.5-week high on Monday and finished the day up by +0.28%. This increase in the dollar's value was largely due to a decline in stocks, which boosted liquidity demand for the dollar.
Meanwhile, WTI crude oil prices rallied to a 3.75-month high, raising inflation expectations that could persuade the Federal Reserve to tighten monetary policy. Expectations of a 25 bp interest rate hike at the upcoming FOMC meeting on Tuesday and Wednesday also supported the dollar.
The euro (EUR/USD) rose by +0.36% on Monday, while the yen is under pressure from a stronger dollar. Japan's July industrial production was revised downward to -0.2% month-over-month, which is negative for the yen. The recent surge in crude oil prices, up 3%, is also bearish for the Japanese economy and the yen.
Precious metals prices, including gold (GCZ26) and silver (SIZ26), fell sharply on Monday, posting 5-week lows. This decline was largely due to the dollar's rally and rising inflation expectations, which could lead central banks to tighten monetary policy.
