Dollar Soars as Crude Oil Prices Jump and Hawks Dominate
The US dollar index rose by +0.29% on Monday as crude oil prices surged and T-note yields increased, making it an attractive option for investors seeking safe-haven assets.
Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack added fuel to the fire with hawkish comments, stating that she doesn't see a problem with the job market and that inflation is not coming down on its own. She emphasized the need for action, suggesting that 'some number' of rate hikes would be necessary to bring down inflation.
The dollar's strength weighed heavily on the euro, which fell by -0.15% on Monday as the +5% increase in crude oil prices had a bearish impact on the Eurozone economy and the euro itself. However, investor confidence in the Eurozone rose to a 6-month high, limiting losses in the euro.
The yen was also under pressure, tumbling to a 1-week low against the dollar as higher T-note yields undercut its value. Japan's energy imports also contributed to the yen's decline, with crude oil prices surging by +5% on Monday.
