Dollar Soars as Iran Tensions Send Oil Prices Skyrocketing
The US dollar has reached its highest level in seven weeks due to escalating tensions between the United States and Iran. The conflict has pushed oil prices higher, causing Brent crude to surge above $95 a barrel.
This has led to increased expectations that major central banks will keep interest rates elevated. As a result, the dollar index climbed to 99.808, its highest level since mid-August.
The euro fell to around $1.1570 as investors sought the relative safety of US assets amid renewed geopolitical uncertainty. The Federal Reserve's monetary policy report from July stated that inflation remained elevated, and energy-price increases associated with the Middle East conflict had contributed to price pressures.
Markets are now closely watching the Fed's September 15-16 meeting, with traders pricing a roughly two-thirds probability of a rate increase. A higher US interest rate relative to other major economies can support the dollar by making dollar-denominated assets more attractive.
