Dollar Strength Sinks Gold as Investors Eye Inflation Data
Gold prices slipped on Monday as the US Dollar strengthened, causing gold to become more expensive for holders of other currencies. The US Dollar index held near recent highs due to expectations that the Federal Reserve may keep interest rates higher for longer.
The decline in gold prices was attributed primarily to a firmer US Dollar. Spot gold fell approximately 0.4% to $2,320 per ounce, while US gold futures also slipped.
Investors are now focusing on the upcoming US Consumer Price Index (CPI) report, scheduled for release later this week. A higher-than-expected CPI reading could reinforce the case for prolonged high rates, putting further pressure on gold.
The Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint for global oil shipments, is another area of concern. Any disruption to shipping routes could fuel inflation and drive safe-haven demand, potentially benefiting gold in the medium term.
