Dollar Weakness Sparks Stagflation Fears
The US Dollar's weakness has sent shockwaves through global markets, causing gold and oil prices to rise. Despite high US yields, the Dollar slipped to a three-month low against the Euro, while Brent crude climbed above $94 a barrel and the gold price surged past $4,600.
Goldman Sachs trader Richard Privorotsky described the backdrop as having a 'definite stagflation smell', highlighting the risk of weaker growth accompanied by persistent inflation. This scenario would leave central banks with little room to support the economy.
The latest oil rally has been driven by physical supply concerns rather than speculative positioning alone, with Middle Eastern exports remaining disrupted and the impasse surrounding Iran and the Strait of Hormuz preventing a more substantial recovery in regional shipments.
