Dow Shatters Record High as Tech Shares Surge, Oil Prices Fall
The US stock market experienced a significant surge on its first trading day of August, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average shattering its record high close. The Dow jumped by nearly 700 points, or 1.3%, to reach a new record high, surpassing its previous peak just above 53,000 set on July 6.
The S&P 500 and NASDAQ also saw significant gains, with the S&P 500 up 1.5% and approaching its all-time high from early June, while the NASDAQ rose by 2.1%. The increase in major tech company shares contributed to the market's movement.
The fall in oil prices added to the overall positive trend, with Brent crude futures dropping 5% to $83.46 a barrel and West Texas Intermediate futures sliding over 7% to $78.59 per barrel. The decline in oil prices may have been influenced by President Trump's decision to call off planned strikes against Iran.
