Draper Winter Wheat Meeting Tackles Drought-Related Challenges
The South Dakota State University Extension invites wheat producers and community members to attend the 37th annual Winter Wheat Meeting in Draper, which will take place on August 27, 2026.
The event starts at 6:30 p.m. CDT at the City of Draper Auditorium with a free meal served beforehand. Clarence Winter, SDSU Extension Agronomy Field Specialist, stated that winter wheat is a unique crop due to its growth across all four seasons, presenting challenges for producers who rely on favorable conditions throughout the production cycle.
This year's meeting will focus on addressing drought-related impacts and lessons learned from the 2026 season. Sunish Sehgal, SDSU professor and lead winter wheat breeder, will present findings from the 2026 winter wheat variety trials and share updates on ongoing breeding efforts.
Matt Elliott, associate professor and SDSU Extension Agribusiness Specialist, will discuss current wheat market conditions and price trends. Laura Edwards, SDSU Extension State Climatologist, will provide a climate update and outlook for South Dakota, including insights on weather-related impacts to wheat production.
