Drilling Permits Soar as Other Oil Field Activities Plummet
A new state law aimed at reducing soaring gasoline prices has led to an unexpected outcome in Kern County, California. According to a recent analysis of state data, drilling permits have surged by nearly 20 times compared to the previous year-end total.
In June, there were 353 new drilling permits issued statewide, whereas remedial well-rework permits have dropped by 81% from last year's total. This trend is contrary to expectations, as the increase in drilling permits was anticipated when the law took effect in January.
The law aimed to address high gasoline prices by stimulating oil production. However, the data suggests that it has had an unintended consequence on other oil field activities. The drop in well reworks and other non-drilling activities raises concerns about the long-term impact of the policy.
