Drone Attack on Saudi Pipeline Sends Oil Prices Soaring Above $100
Crude oil prices have surged above $100 a barrel as traders assess the impact of a drone attack on Saudi Arabia's East-West pipeline. The pipeline, which can transport up to 7 million barrels per day, has been halted following damage from drones. Brent crude futures rose by 3.1% to $107.82 per barrel, while US WTI futures gained 2.8% to $102.82.
Vijay Valecha, Chief Investment Officer at Century Financial, noted that the shutdown has heightened fears of tighter supplies and could lead to output cuts by Saudi Arabia. 'If the pipeline closure is prolonged, it could lead to output cuts by the Kingdom, suggesting a short-term bullish market structure,' he said.
However, some analysts believe the market retains sufficient buffers to absorb a temporary disruption. Norbert Rücker, Head of Economics & Next Generation Research at Julius Baer, said that while the pipeline outage has increased uncertainty, it is unlikely to trigger a prolonged supply crisis on its own.
