Drone Strikes Force Saudi Pipeline Closure Amid Hormuz Tensions

Saudi Arabia has temporarily shut down its 1,200km East-West oil pipeline after drone attacks on September 10. The move is a precautionary measure to protect the vital energy export route.

The pipeline transports approximately 4 million to 5 million barrels of crude per day, equivalent to around 4%, 5% of global supply. This shutdown threatens an alternative to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, which has been severely disrupted by recent attacks and tensions.

Saudi Arabia's Energy Ministry stated that some injuries were reported due to the drone strikes, but no further details on damage or exports have been provided. The pipeline closure has sent global oil prices soaring above $100 a barrel.
