Drought-Driven Wheat Price Spike Looms as Global Temperatures Rise
A new study published in Earth's Future warns that rising global temperatures could lead to a significant increase in wheat prices. According to the research, a 3°C increase in temperature relative to mid-20th-century baselines could triple average global wheat prices compared to 2010.
The study found that synchronized severe water scarcity across major breadbaskets accounts for 74% of annual wheat price fluctuations, posing a significant threat to global food security. The researchers used climate models and historical data to analyze the impact of drought on wheat prices.
Under a 3°C warming scenario, global wheat prices are projected to average around USD 364 per metric ton, roughly three times the inflation-adjusted global wheat price recorded in 2010. Even under a lower warming threshold of 2°C, the estimated average price of wheat rises to USD 273 per ton.
The study's authors emphasize that drought does not operate in a vacuum and is influenced by other factors such as energy prices, fertilizer costs, and currency fluctuations. However, they stress that severe water scarcity provides a distinct, predictable climate-driven baseline that will increasingly dictate food affordability.
