Drought-Stricken England Faces Food Shortages and Price Hikes

Farmers in England and Wales are facing unprecedented challenges due to the prolonged drought, with some forced to bring their harvest weeks early. According to Tom Bradshaw, president of the National Farmers' Union, water security is essential for food production, which in turn affects national security.

The drought has resulted in the driest July on record, causing many arable farmers to harvest their wheat early, leading to lower yields and potential shortages. Potato production is also heavily impacted, as about half of what is produced requires irrigation, with reservoirs almost empty.

Mr Bradshaw urged the government to support farmers by providing tax breaks to build water storage systems on their land, emphasizing the need for a resilient food system as a national priority.
