Dutch Central Bank Relocates Gold from US Amid Geopolitical Tensions
The Dutch central bank, De Nederlandsche Bank, has relocated around 86 tons of gold from the United States and Canada to London over a six-month period between March and August. The move is seen as a response to 'geopolitical unrest' caused by President Donald Trump's continued threats to NATO allies.
The bank cited increasing geopolitical tension as the primary driver for the relocation, saying that gold held at the Bank of England can be deployed more quickly in a crisis than bullion stored in New York or Ottawa. The transfer involved selling 59 tons of gold stored in New York and using the proceeds to buy gold in London.
The move changes the geographic distribution of the Netherlands' overall gold holdings, with London now holding the largest share, up sharply from its previous level. New York and Ottawa's shares have each fallen to about 19%, down from 31% held in New York alone before the transfer.
