Dutch Gold Reserve Shift Reflects New Priorities in Crisis Preparedness
The Netherlands has made significant changes to its gold reserves, relocating and repurposing them for better crisis preparedness. The country still owns 612.4 tonnes of gold but has adjusted where it is held, with London now holding a larger share.
The Bank of England's vaults in London are now home to 32.1% of the Netherlands' gold reserves, up from 18.1%. Meanwhile, New York and Ottawa each hold 18.5%, while approximately 31% remains within the Netherlands itself.
This move was not about acquiring more gold but rather about improving its accessibility during a crisis. The Dutch central bank conducted a live test of its procedures by physically transporting some gold from North America to Europe, demonstrating that reserves can be relocated if needed.
