Dutch Gold Reserves Relocated to London Amid Geopolitical Tensions
The Dutch Central Bank, De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB), has relocated 86 tonnes of its gold reserves from the United States and Canada to London. This move is aimed at enhancing the liquidity and tradability of its gold holdings amid rising economic and geopolitical uncertainties.
The DNB governor, Olaf Sleijpen, explained that gold stored in New York and Ottawa could not be utilized as quickly or directly in a crisis, prompting the decision to shift a portion of its reserves to London. The bank's goal is to strengthen its resilience and preparedness, although it expects it will never need to use them.
The complex operation involved selling about 59 tonnes of gold in New York and repurchasing the same amount in London. Additionally, more than 27 tonnes were physically transported from the U.S. and Canada to DNB's vaults in Zeist, while an equivalent amount of gold was moved from the Netherlands to London.
