Edouard Storm Threatens Texas Refineries and LNG Facilities
Tropical Storm Edouard is threatening the Texas refineries and LNG facilities as it approaches the upper Texas and southwest Louisiana coasts. Forecasters warn that the storm could strengthen before landfall on Tuesday, September 1.
The National Hurricane Center (NHC) has issued a Hurricane Watch and Storm Surge Warning for portions of the shoreline, including coastal regions surrounding some of the largest U.S. oil refining and liquefied natural gas (LNG) facilities.
The top five refineries by operable capacity on January 1, 2026, are located in Texas, with four of them in the state and one in Louisiana. The Motiva's Port Arthur refinery has a capacity of 730,000 barrels per day, while Marathon's Galveston Bay refinery has a crude refining capacity of 631,000 barrels per calendar day.
The Sabine Pass LNG project by Cheniere Energy is near the Texas border and within the watch and warning zone of the storm. Cheniere states that Sabine Pass has a total of six operational liquefaction trains with an LNG production capacity of about 30 million metric tons per year.
