Egypt Emerges as Eastern Mediterranean Energy Powerhouse
Egypt is emerging as a significant player in the Eastern Mediterranean's energy landscape thanks to its vast natural gas reserves. The country's five largest natural gas fields, including Zohr and the West Nile Delta fields, have played a pivotal role in strengthening Egypt's position as an energy hub.
The Zohr field, discovered by Eni in 2015, remains Egypt's largest natural gas discovery and one of the biggest discoveries in the Mediterranean. Initially estimated to hold around 30 trillion cubic feet of gas reserves, Zohr has been producing approximately 1 billion cubic feet per day since early production began in December 2017.
The North Alexandria and West Nile Delta development comprises five major fields: Libra, Taurus, Giza, Fayoum, and Raven. Estimated to contain around 5 trillion cubic feet of gas reserves, these fields have contributed significantly to Egypt's overall gas supply.
