Egypt LNG Terminal Drone Strike Sparks Fears Over Global Energy Supplies

A drone strike on an LNG terminal in Egypt has raised concerns about global energy supplies. The attack occurred on July 29, when a drone struck the FSRU (floating storage and regasification unit) Energos Winter at the port of Damietta. Egyptian authorities said only that the fire had been caused by an unidentified drone.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, but some analysts believe it may have been an Iranian retaliation against Ukraine. Two days before the strike, Iranian state television aired a segment titled “What could be the targets of Iran's retaliation against Ukraine?”

Among the potential targets mentioned was the port of Damietta, which is home to two separate LNG facilities. The facility that was damaged is an import terminal, not export infrastructure, according to gas infrastructure experts.
