Egypt Sees Surge in Food Exports Amid Tighter Safety Inspections
The National Food Safety Authority (NFSA) in Egypt reported a significant surge in food exports between August 8-14, with Saudi Arabia emerging as the top importer. A total of 160,000 tons of food products were exported during this period, led by strawberries, sweet potatoes, and onions. The NFSA also confirmed the registration of new storage facilities, bringing the total to 1,716, and issued over 1,000 export permits and health certificates.
On the import side, Egypt received 176,000 tons of food products, mainly wheat and oils, with Russia as the leading supplier. The NFSA carried out over 1,600 inspection missions across 6,600 establishments, resulting in the destruction of unsafe products and licensing of refrigerated trucks.
The increased exports are a positive development for Egypt's economy, which relies heavily on agriculture and food production. However, the NFSA's efforts to ensure food safety and quality control are crucial to maintaining the country's reputation as a reliable exporter.
