Egypt's Gold Market Transformed by Fintech and Digital Wallets
A recent study by Marsad Al Dahab for Economic Studies has identified a significant transformation in Egypt's gold market over the past five years. The shift extends beyond rising prices or changing demand patterns, affecting how gold is purchased, sold, stored and financed.
The study notes that the real transformation cannot be described as simply moving gold sales from physical stores to the internet. Instead, the entire gold investment journey has changed, including accessing prices, making purchasing decisions, payment, custody and delivery, and resale with financial services.
Egypt's total gold demand reached around 22 tonnes in the first half of 2026, compared to approximately 21.7 tonnes during the same period in 2025. Jewellery consumption declined by about 17%, while demand for gold bars and coins increased by roughly 24%.
