Egypt's Power Grid Hits Record High Amid Severe Summer Heat
Egypt's power grid has reached an unprecedented high of 40,000 megawatts (MW) on August 11, surpassing last year's peak of 39,800 MW. This surge in demand is attributed to the severe heatwave gripping Egypt, with daytime temperatures consistently exceeding 40°C.
The National Energy Control Center (NECC) reported a 700 MW increase from the previous day's load, highlighting the sharp rise in consumption during this summer season. Despite the record-breaking demand, the unified grid has so far met the requirements, thanks to efficiency upgrades, maintenance programs, and adherence to international standards.
The Electricity Minister, Mahmoud Esmat, is closely monitoring grid performance and peak-load readiness, with technical support, emergency crews, maintenance teams, and inspection committees on high alert. The Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources has also reviewed plans to secure natural gas supplies during the second half of the summer, including deliveries to power plants amid high temperatures.
The electricity sector's coordination with the petroleum ministry aims to maintain grid stability and meet local demand. In June, both ministries predicted an 8% year-on-year increase in electricity demand during the summer, prompting a review of operating scenarios and contingency plans for peak consumption periods.
