El Niño Devastates South American Fishmeal and Oil Output
South American fishmeal and fish oil output fell by nearly half in the first seven months of this year, due to the impact of El Niño on supply.
The International Fishmeal and Fish Oil Organisation (IFFO) reported a 49% decrease in global fishmeal production through July. Meanwhile, fish oil output was down 30% over the same period.
El Niño has disrupted marine ecosystems and affected the availability of raw materials for fishmeal and fish oil production. The industry is bracing itself for further supply chain disruptions as the climate phenomenon continues to unfold.
