El Nino-Driven Slump Hits Natural Gas Winter Strip
Natural gas winter forward prices have taken a significant hit this year, plummeting to their lowest level in 2026/27 on Wednesday. The slump is a result of an extremely strong El Niño and robust supply, echoing a similar trend seen three years ago.
This monthslong slide has caused the winter strip to lose 22% of its value since the start of the year, with production holding steady at around 112 Bcf/d. The current situation mirrors the 2023/24 winter season, which also experienced a deep drop in natural gas prices.
The El Niño phenomenon is a key factor contributing to this downturn, as it typically leads to reduced demand for natural gas during the winter months. With a historically strong El Niño in place, it's likely that natural gas prices will continue to feel the pressure.
