El Niño Drives Latin America LNG Imports to Three-Year High

Latin America's imports of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and vessel traffic through the Panama Canal have reached three-year highs in July, according to data from Kpler.

The surge in LNG imports was driven by El Niño, a weather phenomenon that has led to droughts and reduced hydroelectric power generation in several countries in the region.

Colombia imported record volumes of LNG during this period, while US supplies accounted for most regional cargoes. Chile paid above $20 per million British thermal units (MMBtu) for its LNG imports.
