El Niño Weighs on Global Fishmeal and Fish Oil Production
Global fishmeal and fish oil production is under pressure due to El Niño conditions reducing raw material availability in Peru, Chile, Northern Europe, and parts of Asia.
The Peruvian fishing industry has been particularly affected, with a quota set at 1.91 million tonnes for the first 2026 North-Central anchovy season, but only around 25% of that quota was caught due to repeated interruptions and closures.
Marine ingredient production in Peru is consequently below historical levels so far this year, and El Niño conditions are expected to persist into early 2027.
