Enbridge Delays Mainline Pipeline Expansion Amid Output Uncertainty

Enbridge, Canada's leading pipeline operator, has announced that it will postpone its plans for the second phase of its Mainline oil pipeline expansion. The decision comes as Canadian oil producers have not committed to significant output increases, which is a crucial factor in the project's viability.

The second phase of the Mainline pipeline would have increased exports of Canadian crude to U.S. refineries by 250,000 barrels per day. However, Enbridge CEO Greg Ebel stated that the company will focus on other projects first, including the Flanagan South Expansion and the Southern Access Extension.

Ebel emphasized that Canada is facing a generational opportunity to expand its oil output due to recent federal government policy changes and the rollback of some environmental rules. However, he noted that Canadian oil sands companies are unlikely to boost production until there is more policy and regulatory certainty.
