Enbridge Launches Open Season for Proposed West Texas Natural Gas Pipeline

Enbridge, a major energy company, has launched an open season for its proposed West Texas Express natural gas pipeline. The project aims to transport gas from the Waha area of the Permian Shale in West Texas to markets in and around El Paso, Texas.

The Permian is the largest oil-producing shale basin in the United States, with associated gas production also making it a significant contributor to the country's natural gas supplies. As more oil and gas are produced from the reservoir, pressure declines, making gas easier to produce at lower pressures, which has led to an increase in the gas-to-oil ratio.

According to data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration, the gas-to-oil ratio has increased by 16% over the past five years, reaching nearly 4,200 cubic feet of gas per barrel of oil (cf/b). This growth in natural gas production necessitates more pipelines and energy infrastructure to process and transport the fuel.

The proposed West Texas Express project includes over 150 miles of new pipeline with an initial transportation capacity of up to two billion cubic feet per day. One billion cubic feet of gas can supply around five million U.S. homes for a day, highlighting the importance of reliable gas supplies in the region.
