EnerGeo Alliance Pushes for Oil and Gas Exploration in South Africa Amid Global Energy Challenges
The EnerGeo Alliance industry group is calling for the exploration of oil and gas in South Africa due to rising demand from a growing population and global energy supply challenges. Ross Compton, senior director for global policy at the EnerGeo Alliance, said that wars, growth headwinds, and population growth make exploration and seismic surveys necessary.
The group has moved on from recent court cases, which reaffirmed the importance of consultation in the process. Compton stated that the government needs to finalize regulations in the Upstream Petroleum Resources Development Act to provide certainty for the industry.
South Africa is facing a 'gas cliff' and limited capacity to refine products, according to Compton. He said that the population's growth and urbanization emphasize the need for centralized power, with natural gas being an essential component.
