Energia Costa Azul LNG Facility Ships First Cargo, Boosting Mexican Energy Exports
The Energia Costa Azul LNG facility in Mexico has shipped its first cargo of liquefied natural gas (LNG), marking a significant milestone for the country's energy sector. The terminal, developed by Sempra Infrastructure, is located north of Ensenada in Baja California and has tripled Mexico's LNG export capacity.
The Energia Costa Azul facility received its first cargo on July 8, adding 0.4 Bcf/d (billion cubic feet per day) of nominal LNG export capacity from its initial liquefaction train. This makes it the second operating LNG export facility in Mexico and the first on the Pacific Coast.
The location provides a shorter shipping route to customers in Asia compared to LNG facilities on the U.S. Gulf Coast, which often require vessels to transit the Panama Canal or sail around South America. The terminal's completion has raised North American Pacific Coast LNG export capacity to 2.2 Bcf/d.
