Energy Crisis Exposes Weaknesses in Bangladesh's Energy Sector

The ongoing energy crisis in Bangladesh has left many questioning its cause and solution. According to economist Fahmida Khatun, the current situation is not solely due to external factors such as global conflicts. Instead, it has exposed the long-standing weaknesses in the country's energy sector.

One of the major issues is the lack of sufficient investment in gas exploration. The production from existing gas fields is declining, and the country is heavily reliant on imported energy. This has resulted in a shortage of fuel for power plants, leading to frequent disruptions in electricity supply.

The high cost of energy is also affecting industries such as textiles, spinning, ceramics, steel, and fertilizers. Many factories have been forced to reduce production or use alternative fuels due to the uncertainty of gas supply. This not only impacts their efficiency but also increases their costs.

To overcome this crisis, Khatun suggests that the government should focus on increasing domestic gas exploration. This can be achieved by expediting both land and sea-based explorations and involving international companies through a transparent process. Investing in renewable energy sources such as solar power is also crucial to reduce dependence on imported fuels.

Improving the transmission and distribution systems of gas and electricity is also essential. Simply increasing supply without ensuring its delivery will not solve the problem. Energy efficiency must be increased by using advanced technologies such as boilers, motors, and captive power plants in industries.
